Maggie O'Farrell: Hamnet

Long time no books! I’m here to share one of my recent reads, which shall sit on the throne above everything I have read this year so far. Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell. In case you're not familiar with the title name (where have you been?), Hamnet, twin brother of Judith, was the son of William Shakespeare. A child that died of plague, supposedly, and as we all learned in literature classes the grief over that loss is reflected in a certain well known play of a similar name. This book is a fictionalised account of the events surrounding this tragedy hitting the family. Upon recommendations by booktubers Jen and Lauren, I couldn't resist buying it, as soon as I came across a copy. Also, it is SO PRETTY I MEAN LOOK AT IT!!!

Dlouho nebyly žádné knihy! Jsem tu, abych se podělila o jednu z nedávno dočtených knížek, která usedá na trůn nade vše, co jsem zatím letos přečetla. Hamnet od Maggie O’Farrellové. Pro případ, že vám jméno v názvu nic neříká (kde jste byli?), Hamnet, dvojče Judity, byl syn Williama Shakesepeara. Dítě, které zemřelo, zřejmě na mor, a jak jsme se všichni učili v hodinách literatury, žal z této ztráty se odráží v jisté dobře známé hře, která nese podobné jméno. Tato kniha je beletristická interpretace událostí okolo této tragédie, která rodinu zasáhla. Po doporučení booktuberek Jen a Lauren, jsem nedokázala odolat, když jsem pak Hamenta potkala v knihkupectví. A taky, ta knížka je TAK PĚKNÁ, PODIVEJTE NA NI!!!

Originally, I wanted to post a short and sweet recommendation on Instagram, but it got out of hand and will not fit on Insta. So I thought, remembered :D that I actually have a blog. Here it is, then. I hope you like it. And the book.

Původně jsem chtěla dát krátké a roztomilé doporučení na Instagram, ale trochu se mi to vymklo a na Insta se to nevejde. Tak jsem si řekla, vzpomněla :D že mám vlastně blog. Taj tady to je. Doufám, že se vám to bude líbit. I ta kniha.

I can tell you now that this will become a classic. Just like Shakespeare's work is classic, because it deals with themes that are universal, quintessentially human and ever present in our existence: Otherness and exclusion, family relationships and tensions, finding one's own way in the world, health, including mental health! and fragility of human existence. Love and loss. Grief. The ever-present, all consuming grief. Everything depicted and expressed with such elegance... O'Farrell writes for all senses. They are not just words and stories, but smells, sounds, visual perceptions and feelings. You open the book on your lap and the pages breathe, alive.

Můžu vám už teď říct, že se z toho stane klasika. Stejně jako Shakespearovo dílo je klasika, protože se věnuje tématům, která jsou universální, bytostně lidská a po vždycky přítomná v naší existenci: Jinakost a vyloučení, rodinné vztahy a napětí, hledaní vlastní cesty životem, zdraví, včetně duševního zdraví! a křehkost lidské existence. Láska a ztráta. Žal. Všudypřítomný a vše pohlcující žal. Vše podáno a vyjádřeno s takovou elegancí… O’Farrellová píše pro všechny smysly. Ne jenom slova a příběhy, ale pachy, zvuky, visuální vjemy, pocity. Otevřete tu knihu na klíně a máte pocit, že stránky dýchají, žijí.

"How easy it is, Agnes thinks, as she lifts the plates, to miss the pain and anguish of one person, if that person keeps quiet, keeps it all in, like a bottle stoppered too tightly, the pressure inside building and building, until - what?"

"Jak snadné je, pomyslí si Agnes, když sbírá talíře, přehlédnout bolest a utrpení jednoho člověka, když je ten člověk tichý, drží to v sobě, jako příliš těsně uzátkovaná láhev, tlak uvnitř roste a roste, dokud - co?"

I will say that at first, I found it slightly slow to get into and get absorbed in it. It took some time, but it was a time of beautiful words. And then towards the end, again, I had to push myself to pick it up. I did love the book, but it was genuinely so devastating and sad that I found it tough to read and sometimes I had to take time away from it.

Musím podotknout, že zpočátku pro mě bylo těžší se do toho začít a ponořit se. Nějaký čas to trvalo, ale byl to čas krásných slov. A potom k závěru jsem se opět musela nutit, knížku otevřít. Moc se mi líbila, ale byla tak opravdově smutná a skličující, že se mi to těžko četlo a musela jsem si od toho občas oddechnout.

It felt particularly symbolic reading this on the back end of the COVID quarantine (in my country, at that time #everythingchanges). All this pestilence talk. Contagious disease. There is an interesting bit on how and where from the infection travelled and arrived in Stratford to the Shakespeare family. A series of small, unrelated coincidences that end up affecting a great number of people and taking their lives. Something that somehow we understand a lot better now than we would have last year.

Bylo obzvlášť symbolické číst to, když se COVID karanténa chýlila ke konci (v mojí zemi, v té době #everythingchanges). Tyhle řeči o moru, zhoubné nákaze. Je tam zajímavá pasáž o tom, jak a odkud infekce putovala, až dorazila do Stratfordu k rodině Shakespearových. Řada malých, nesouvisejících náhod, které nakonec zasáhly velké množství lidí a vzaly jim životy. Něco, čemu teď tak nějak rozumíme o hodně líp, než bychom rozuměli třeba před rokem.

I am tempted to say you should read it if you love Shakespeare. But… it's not really about him as such. It is about his family, the relationships. If there is more focus on one person, it is the wife Agnes (Anne). His name is never used, he is only ever referred to by words that describe his role or relationship to someone (tutor, son, husband, father, player,...). To Shakespeare lovers, it gives an insight into... a possible version of life events that formed and seep through in his work. When I was reading about that beautiful unique relationship between twin brother and sister, I saw, unmistakably, their reflection in Viola and Sebastian in Twelfth Night (which is a play I happen to be quite familiar with). There is more of course, but I don't want to spoil your reading experience. End of recommending. It is a beautiful book, in all senses of the word. Read it.

Chtělo by se mi říct, přečtěte si to, jestli máte rádi Shakesepara. Ale… ono to vlastně není o něm. Je to o jeho rodině, o vztazích. Pokud je kladen důraz na nějakou osobu, tak je to manželka Agnes (Anne). Jeho jméno není nikde použité, mluví se o něm ve slovech, která označují jeho roli, vztah k někomu (učitel, syn, manžel, otec, herec,…). Milovníkům Shakespeara se naskytne vhled do… možné verze životních událostí, které formovaly jeho dílo a prosakují v něm. Když jsem četla o krásném sourozeneckém vztahu mezi dvojčaty bratrem a sestrou, bez pochyb jsem viděla jejich odraz ve Viole a Sebastianovi z Večeru tříkrálového (což je hra, kterou mám zrovna docela načtenou). Je tam toho víc, samozřejmě, ale nechci vám kazit čtenářský zážitek. Konec doporučování. Je to krásná kniha, ve všech smyslech slova. Přečtěte si ji.
